About Showgirl Sparkle
I'm Vogue Mahone (she/her), burlesque babe and proprietrix of Showgirl Sparkle. (Yes, I know that's not a word but I'm trying to make it stick.)
There's a showgirl in all of us, regardless of gender identity.
I'm on a mission to empower everybody to show their inner sparkle to the world.
In 2016, I took a "Learn to Love Your Jiggly Bitts" beginner burlesque class with the Fabulous Miss Rosie Bitts. (I highly recommend Rosie's classes to anyone wanting to learn to have more self-compassion, and to change their relationship with their bodies!)
Our burlesque graduation show was so much fun, in this student bar at the University of Victoria, back then. As a 41-year old baby burlesquer, I had no grand illusions of becoming Dita von Teese.
But I loved all it; the self-expression, the independence of creating an entire solo act (the production design, from music to choreography to costuming to props), the many different types of burlesque, and the momentary glimpses into the brilliant, artistic brains of the performers around me, and the socially aware community that makes burlesque such a fascinating art form.
With a background in art and design, naturally I gravitated towards costuming! I began creating pasties and costume accessories for myself and my friends, and they became popular in my local community.
Providing rhinestones to my local burlesque babes soon followed, and today my intricate pasties, headpieces, hair flowers, and bespoke embellishments are worn by performers all over the world!
I now stock more than 60 colours of non-hotfix flatback rhinestones in various sizes for the “sparkle-it-yourselfers”, and they are packaged as small as 1 gross, so you can easily stock up on all those weird and wonderful rhinestone colours that your sparkly heart desires. I love sharing my love of rhinestones; if you have a question, or if there's something specific you are looking for, I'm happy to help!
I also offer full costume consultations, in-person or over Zoom.
My strengths are in modifying existing garments for stage success, layering, colour theory, creating opulent, impactful embellishments, and sourcing one-of-a-kind costume solutions for my clients.
Working with brand new burlesque students and assisting with fundamental costume design on a budget is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
“Rhinestone 101” is my class teaching the basics of successfully applying rhinestones to costumes, and “Pastie-Making: Super Easy and Fun!”, is a crafty, hands-on class that includes everything you need to make awesome, professional, tasseled pasties of your very own! (We did one over Zoom recently and it was rally fun. There will be more coming soon!)
I also teach "Costuming 101" to share the kind wisdom that has been shared with me, plus the lessons I've learned myself the hard way!
